Someone, a friend of a friend, asked me that the other day. She said, “How do you measure success in your line of work? Is it just money or are you after fame too?”
I copped out and just shrugged my shoulders. I was thinking it takes some nerve to ask someone that. I mean, would you ask that of a lawyer, a doctor, or communications expert? (Yeah, that is what she does.)
But then, I got to thinking… how am I measuring my success? Well, I am not apparently. I know how many newsletter readers I have, its a good amount, but does that equal success? Not really. By how many books you’ve written? Considering this pen name needs to get off her tuchus to get the next one done, I don’t think so. How about how happy I am, is there success there? Of course, because I am happy. Family life is going as good as can be expected in Covid-19 times, I have a loving husband, kids and grand kid are healthy.
So, I’ve decided to start measuring my success with each little bit, each step forward even if it does force two steps back. I finished outlining a couple of chapters today. I wonder if she would think that was a success?
